There have been mothers and fathers crying over the premature death of their children as long as the sun has been reigning supreme in the sky. Often times we get so caught ini the grief, the tragedy and the travesty of it that we fail to realize that these things are happening by some kind of mystic coincidence. In this country the playing field may look a little different but the names and games have been slightly changed to protect the guilty.
Basic war tactics dictate that if you either kill the head or the seed then no growth can ever take place. We look at Sean Bell, Amadou Diallo, Yusef Hawkins,Ayiana Jones and now Oscar Grant. At first glance people have the audacity to say that there had to be something the parents were doing to warrant that attention in the first place. Based upon the misinformation that was received by the pollice force they raided and assinated a little girl who will never know what it is to grow up and graduate school. Grow up to have a boyfriend, become a wife and mother.
It's not just the fact that they went into the wrong house but the fact that all this telling and snitching cost an innocent child her life. Should we be outraged? Yes. Should we do something about it? Yes. But in order to affect change outside the community, one has to come from within. Our children are our responsibility and the duty to protect them falls upon us. If we don't start living the African saying "It takes a village to raise a child" again we will continue to see this sort of thing. Yes we know that our lives are of no value to those in so-called power, that's why you have to value yourself, your brother, your sister because if you don't then never expect anyone else to.
